Profile America -- Tuesday, Aug. 1. The entertainment world saw the start of a major new player 25 years ago today as MTV linked music and television into a new kind of broadcast format. The new channel immediately became a hit with teenagers and was later joined by VH1, a channel aimed at older popular music fans. The impact of MTV was such that pop groups began to lavish as much attention on their music videos as they did on their original recordings. And music is a big business. Even though our spending on commercially recorded music has dropped from $14 billion to $12 billion annually in recent years, American adults have more than doubled their purchase of music on the Internet, to an average of $128 each.
