Police, YCCAR join forces to increase diversity

The York County Community Against Racism is working with the Metropolitan York Police Testing Consortium to help increase diversity in local police departments.
The two organizations are hosting a public meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Crispus Attucks Community Center, 605 S. Duke St. in York City.
"There's about 18 open positions in our police departments, and they're looking to hire the best people to fill the vacancies," said Ryan Sattler, YCCAR's founder and president. "We would love to see a significant number of those positions filled with people of color, male and female."
While the public is invited to attend the meeting, the main purpose of the gathering is to give possible recruits a chance to meet police chiefs and officers from various ethnic backgrounds. Police also will talk about their work and answer questions.
"We realize that policing in York County is very underrepresented with nonwhite, minority applicants," said Police Chief George Swartz of Spring Garden
Township Police Department. "We need to be representative of the communities we serve. We want to hear from African-American, Hispanic and Asian communities, those who speak a second language, women. Think about it."
