State Police mini-academy tries to draw women, minorities


FOSTER, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island State Police are trying to get more minorities and women into the ranks.

A recently completed mini-police academy gave people from those two groups a chance to fire guns, perform military drills and learn how to chase suspects. Colonel Steven Pare says the goal is to encourage women and minorities to join the State Police.

Right now, Pare's force is seven percent female. Eight percent are male minorities. Graduates of the so-called Diversity Outreach Training Academy don't receive extra credit if they apply to become troopers. More outreach academies are planned. View Article Source:
