The County of El Dorado is conducting this recruitment to fill?one (1) extra help vacancy in the?Community Development Services, Transportation?Department?located in?Placerville,?and one (1) full time vacancy in South Lake Tahoe CA.?It will also establish a list which may be used for up to three months to fill future full time, part time, and extra help vacancies throughout the county.

A Training and Experience Evaluation may be utilized to determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list. Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant's education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula.


Under general supervision, maintains, repairs and overhauls heavy and light road maintenance and construction equipment; operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools.

Equipment Mechanic I
?is the entry-level class in this skilled equipment main?tenance and repair series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of motorized equipment. This class is alternately staffed with Equipment Mechanic II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining the required experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications for the higher-level class.

Equipment Mechanic II?is the skilled, journey level class in this series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of assigned duties. This class is distinguished from Senior Equipment Mechanic in that the latter assigns, directs and reviews the work of mechanics and others and performs the most difficult troubleshooting and repair work.


Examples of Essential Functions


  • Performs skilled maintenance and repair of heavy and light equipment such as trucks, tractors, graders and caterpillars; diagnoses, repairs and overhauls gas and diesel engines.

  • Re-lines, rebuses and rebuilds cams, brake pots, valves and related parts of braking systems.

  • Performs major and minor repairs of rear suspension, walking beams and torque arms.

  • Repairs and replaces driveline components; overhauls rear ends, reduction power dividers, clutch assemblies, universal joints, drive shafts and related components.

  • Repairs and maintains manual, automatic and power shift transmissions, torque converters and related components.

  • Diagnoses, repairs and maintains vehicle air brakes, hydraulic systems and associated power take-off equipment.

  • Rebuilds, repairs and adjusts hydraulic pumps, cylinders, control valves, motors and related components.

  • Diagnoses and repairs power and manual steering systems; electrical systems, starters, generators and related systems, components and parts.

  • Diagnoses and repairs, cleans, adjusts and installs fuel, ignition, electri?cal and cooling systems.

  • Conducts safety checks and operational tests on light, heavy and related equipment.

  • Utilizes personal computers to track equipment maintenance and repairs for costs and scheduling.

  • Road tests equipment; drives trucks or equipment as required; inspects and repairs vehicles in the shop and field.

  • Reads and interprets manuals, drawings and specifications; estimates labor, material and equipment and orders parts required to complete assignments.

  • Makes oral and written reports of work performed; completes forms and keeps accurate maintenance records.

  • Modifies and fabricates new parts for truck bodies and similar equipment; installs and repairs power take-off equipment such as small electric cranes, hoists and small hydraulic lift equipment.

  • Uses and maintains a full set of hand, power and shop tools and test equip?ment related to the work.

  • Observes safe work methods and utilizes safety equipment related to the work; safely handles and disposes of hazardous waste materials.

  • Attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Where college degrees and/or college course credits are required, degrees and college units must be obtained from a regionally accredited college or university. Courses from non-regionally accredited institutions will not be evaluated for this requirement.

Equipment Mechanic I:
?Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Successful completion of appropriate trade school or technical coursework in diesel or gasoline-powered mechanics may be substituted for the required work experience on a year for year basis to a maximum of one year.

Equipment Mechanic II:?In addition to the above,?EITHER?two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Equipment Mechanic I class?OR?completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the vehicle/equipment repair trade.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered light and heavy equipment.

  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the field, including electric arc and gas welding equipment.

  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.

  • Shop mathematics.

  • Computer applications related to work.

Skill in:

  • Diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of light and heavy equipment, vehicles and equipment.

  • Operating and maintaining a variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.

  • Estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.

  • Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications and drawings.

Ability to:

  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.


Other Requirements


Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Must regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to sixty (60) pounds. Must be willing to work night and weekend shifts. Must be willing to work overtime and off-hour shifts in emergency situations.

Equipment Mechanic I?must acquire a valid commercial Class B driver's license with no restrictions as to transmission and air brakes and Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire. Some positions may also require maintaining a Hazardous Materials Endorsement which must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire.

Equipment Mechanic II?must acquire a valid commercial Class B driver's license with no restrictions as to transmission and air brakes and Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire. Some positions may also require maintaining a Hazardous Materials Endorsement which must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire.
