Position Title:       Policy Manager
Department: Government Relations
Location:      Trenton or Cape May Bird Observatory, NJ
Reports to: Vice President of Government Relations
Job Classification: Full time (40-hour week)

Job Description: The Policy Manager will work to advance the conservation agenda of NJ Audubon (NJA). General responsibilities include conservation issue analysis, advocacy before the Legislature, communications with the public and occasionally media, and interfacing with conservation partners. The position will require extensive efforts to support the coordination of the NJ Keep it Green Coalition, the State’s preeminent open space preservation coalition. The Policy Manager will also manage grant projects and work to build relationships with legislators, the media, partner organizations and stakeholders to further NJA conservation goals.

Major Responsibilities:
•     Overseeing and coordinating major components of conservation campaigns, including Legislator and media outreach, securing support of partner organizations when needed.
•     Building relationships with and educating members of the Legislature and their staff on NJA issues including existing and needed legislation.
•     Reviewing potential and pending legislation and providing feedback to appropriate staff when needed.
•     Coordinating with internal NJA staff on development and review of legislation to further conservation priorities.
•     Planning and executing legislator events and cultivating participation to further NJA goals and mission.
•     Preparing and presenting testimony on pending legislation before the State Legislature in coordination with the V.P. of Government Relations.
•     Developing an understanding of NJA activities in all mission areas and building relationships with NJA staff in order to better integrate conservation priorities into Government Relations efforts.
•     Developing and implementing strategies to achieve both NJA and various environmental coalition’s legislative goals in coordination with the V.P. of Government Relations.
•     Managing all components of specific grants, including outreach, media and grassroots efforts, as well as reporting requirements.
•     Supervising NJA Conservation Associate (part-time) as well as interns and campaign-specific staff as needed.
•     Providing significant capacity for NJA coordination of Keep It Green Coalition by organizing lobby days and regular committee calls and meetings, coordinating member group participation, etc.
•     Engaging in grassroots outreach, communications and organizing as needed to support the NJA conservation agenda.
•     Working with environmental and other stakeholders to achieve the above.
•     Representing NJA in meetings and before various organizations as necessary.
•     Working with NJA Communications staff and consultants to prepare press releases, LTEs, and opinion pieces and securing media coverage pertaining to NJA conservation agenda.
•     Drafting letters to decision-makers that reflect NJA concerns, position, or policy suggestions.
•     Writing articles on Advocacy and Government Relations activities and developing member action alerts.
•     Actively participating in and staffing Keep It Green Coalition events and some Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed activities when needed.
•     Participating in NJA fundraising efforts.
•     Performing some administrative functions along with the Government Relations team.
•     Coordinating, preparing and editing grant applications and reports.
•     Preparing necessary reports for the public, the membership, the Board, the President and the Vice Presidents.
•     Speaking at public forums, meetings and events on various conservation topics.
•     Performing other related duties as assigned and performing additional tasks related to supporting the organization.
•     Participating with other staff and volunteers to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the office.

•     Four-year degree and three-plus years relevant work experience required; Master’s degree related to conservation or environmental policy preferred.
•     Excellent computer skills - Microsoft Office.
•     Ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
•     Ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.
•     Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines.
•     Strong professionalism and work ethic.
•     Ability to maintain confidentiality.
•     Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, project management skills.
•     Knowledge of environmental and conservation issues helpful.
•     Organized, a self-starter and able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with other organizations in various coalitions.
•     Media, web, legislative and grassroots advocacy and grant writing experience desired.
•     Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and special needs of the department and the organization. May need to work occasional nights and/or weekends.
•     Must have reliable transportation to get to office and attend meetings.

Starting Date: Immediate
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
