Part Time Statutory Accountant

Three Days per week.

Role Purpose

This role together with the other part time statutory accountant is responsible for all statutory compliance for the Microsoft legal entities in United Kingdom and driving financial stewardship of these companies through adherence and compliance to Microsoft Accounting Policies, UK and International Accounting Standards and tax legislation.

Team/Department Mission

To provide subsidiaries with a rhythm designed to ensure internal controls and related processes are working adequately and in line with regional and corporate goals and initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

1. Statutory Accounts
Ensuring timely completion of the annual statutory accounts for Microsoft UK and subsidiaries
Smooth running of the annual external audit process, ensuring minimal issues and disruptions
Ensure timely filing of the accounts with Companies House

2. Direct & Indirect Tax Compliance
Ensuring timely completion of the annual Corporation Tax return and quarterly payments
Manage annual processes for payroll taxes reporting/filings
Ensure timely & accurate filing of VAT returns and resolution of VAT and duty queries
Maintain effective relationship with tax advisors and HMRC and maintain a low risk status for Microsoft UK
Management of statutory commissions and transfer pricing rules
Business partnering and active advisory on tax and commercial matters

3. Payroll, Incentives & Share based payments
Review and oversight of payroll processing & related accrual calculations
Ensuring that appropriate level of accruals are maintained for bonuses and incentives
UK contact for share based payments ensuring the transactions are taxed correctly and accounted for in accordance with UK GAAP
Ensuring technical information and employee communication is relevant and kept up to date
Effective management of outsourced payroll provider

4. Financial Control
Managing relationship with the vendor for outsourced accounting and making sure that the processes are in compliance with Microsoft and local statutory requirements
Review of balance sheet accounts and ensuring Microsoft Reconciliation Manager Policy is adhered to
Review of Fixed Assets and ensure that Microsoft Capital Expenditure Policy is adhered to
Review of Employee re-imbursements and making sure that the Travel and Expense Policy is adhered to
Ensuring that the Travel and Expense Policy is kept up to date and is aligned to local tax laws
Ensure that any changes in tax laws are reflected in the business processes where necessary
Periodic review of marketing activities to identify any tax exposure and initiating remedial action where necessary
Managing integration of acquisitions in UK

5. Treasury
Maintaining relationship with local banks
Review of Monthly Cash flow forecasting and ensure optimum funds are available at all times
Review of intercompany reconciliation process and loan relationship with other Microsoft entities


Key Success Criteria

Maintain strong relationships with HMRC, outsourced accounting vendor and local banks
100% compliance with UK Statutory & Tax laws ensuring all filings and returns are made on time every time
Accurate tracking of payroll and incentive compensation expenditure and accruals


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

1) Essential Experience
Proven experience within a financial accounting/auditing role
Good knowledge of UK GAAP and IFRS (US GAAP also desirable)
Corporate and employee tax understanding

2) Technical/Functional Skills

Demonstrated high level of skill and knowledge in at least one of the following:
o Statutory accounting
o External audit
o Corporation tax
o VAT
o Payroll taxes

3) Personal Attributes/Interpersonal Skills

Good analytical skills with an eye for details
Exceptional communication, cross group collaboration and interpersonal skills
Highly developed analytical and organizational skills
Ability to maintain independence, autonomy and confidentiality
Ability to multi-task
Pro-active self starter

4) Qualifications

BA/BSc in related field
ACA or equivalent desirable

Special Requirements/Additional Information e.g. Language Skills

Basic salary circa £40000-51000 per annum (pro rata) plus bonus plus excellent benefits package.
