Senior Systems Administrator
Bethesda, MD
Job Description:
The Sr. System Administrators role is to ensure the stable operation of the in-house computer software systems and network connections as well as team leader for Systems Administrators. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network software and communication links, Working together and providing assistance to peers. The person will also analyze and resolve end user software program and connectivity issues in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training where required.
The Senior Systems Administrator reports to Network Planning Manager.
Responsibilities:
Manage and Administrate and Document Disaster Recovery system.
Manage and Administrate and Document VMWare and SAN infrastructure.
Manage and administrate and Document all operating systems and their corresponding or associated software.
Manage communications and connection solutions, including local area networks, and systems administration of Web site, intranet, and Internet applications.
Deploy and maintain firewalls, and all host security activities.
Implement and upgrade systems and networks for overseas and HQ
Distribute and supervise server storage space allotments.
Design and implement disaster recovery plan for operating systems, databases, networks, servers, and software applications.
Provide on-call technical support.
Analyze system or application usage and plan for growth or increases in network capacity.
Assess need for any system reconfigurations (minor or significant) and execute them if required.
Ensure connectivity to all network devices.
Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts.
Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for system administration and appropriate use.
Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
Perform network and security audits.
Monitor and test server software performance and provide statistics and reports.
Recommend, schedule, and perform software improvements, upgrades, and/or purchases.
Provide guidance to junior members of the team.
Preferred Skills:
Good understanding of the organizations goals and objectives.
Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
Desirable knowledge of following technologies, systems and applications, but not limited to: CISCO network routers, switches, security devices, Microsoft Server OS and AD, Altiris, HP SIM, Symantec AV and CA Brightstore backup software, Lotus Domino, IIS, Apache, MS SQL, MySQL, BIND
Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
Adept at reading, writing, and interpreting technical documentation and procedure manuals.
Ability to conduct research into software issues and products as required.
Ability to present ideas and solutions in user-friendly language.
Highly self motivated and directed.
Keen attention to detail.
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Strong customer service orientation.
Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Working Conditions:
On-call availability in emergency situations only.
Sitting for extended periods of time.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components.
Occasional inspection of cables in floors and ceilings.
Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.
Basic Qualifications:
Six or more years work experience in Systems Administration.
College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science or additional equivalent work experience.
Extensive and working technical knowledge of networks and communications, operating systems, including Vmware, SANs, Unix/Linux, Microsoft Windows and PC.
Extensive application support experience.
Working technical knowledge of current systems software, protocols, and standards.
Extensive knowledge of local area network administration.
Hands-on software and hardware troubleshooting experience.
Experience with administration of databases.
