Commentary on “And then they came for Imus”

18 April 2007

James Davis, President of DiversityWorking.com, has just published a strongly opinionated article in defense of freedom of speech and of intellectual diversity in general in media and communications. He wrote: “..they will take us away because there will be no one left to speak out,” which is clearly a finger-wagging warning of a possible attack on freedom of speech.

The world of media as compared to the staid and formal arena of public discourse is not heavily policed when it comes to opinionated or artistic self-expressions. Commentators and hip hop artists are given leeway to speak negatively of people they have a low regard for. This gung-ho attitude which many of media’s players - mostly composed of men - have exhibited without fear of reprisal went on for years. It’s now time we should change this to a more positive and encouraging perspective of colored women in general.
