Position Opening - Administrative Manager

We are seeking an experienced professional who will work to advance regenerative perennial agriculture by leading the Savanna Institute's internal operations and providing administrative support to the Institute's leadership. This position will work closely with the Associate Director and the Co-Executive Directors. This is a high-intensity position with lots of potential for growth. Key activities include: human resources, bookkeeping, grant management, purchasing & office management.

Organization Description

The Savanna Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Madison, Wisconsin and Urbana, Illinois. Established in 2013, we work in collaboration with farmers, scientists, and other stakeholders to develop perennial food and fodder crops within multifunctional systems grounded in ecology and inspired by the savanna biome. Our work aims to lay the groundwork for widespread agroforestry in the Midwest US via strategic research and education. For more information, please visit

Job Description

  • Hours: Full-time

  • Location: Madison, WI; or nearby

  • Start Date: February 2021

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in:

  • Fund accounting & accrual accounting methods.

  • Budget development & monitoring

  • Grant management, reporting & invoicing, including for large government grants.

  • Core human resources activities, including payroll, hiring, insurance & contractor management.

  • Commitment to participating in a collaborative environment.

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong ability to adapt and improve processes for evolving needs and increased efficiency.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Google Apps & task management software.

  • Ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience in a non-profit environment.

  • Experience working closely with academic, non-profit, business, and/or farmer stakeholders.

  • Experience with non-profit fundraising.

  • Willingness to learn or experience with:

  • Donation tracking, donor relations & and contact management.

  • Purchasing & office management

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
