Lester Holt As 1st Solo Black Anchor A Historic Moment for Broadcast Media

In what is touted as a historic moment for black journalists in broadcast media, NBC's Lester Holt has been promoted "from substitute anchor to permanent anchor of the "Nightly News" - CNN reported.

It also said that in fact, Holt did not want to get the prestigious role "through Brian Williams' lapses in judgment, and subsequent punishment" - but it had already been expected by many.

Most significant about Holt's getting the anchor chair of NBC Nightly News is he becomes "the first African-American solo anchor of a weekday network nightly newscast. "It's about time!" said Richard Prince, a columnist for the The Maynard Institute who covers race and the media.[...] "his appointment is an important sign that the networks realize they must keep up with our multicultural times."

People in broadcasting laud Holt's rise to the topmost position in the news program with most saying he richly deserves it well, being the hard-working, respected, veteran journalist that he is. Holt’s former bosses and colleagues are not surprised by his success. When asked about him, terms like “go-to guy” and, yes, “workhorse” are used. Read More...

What could Holt's important role as the first solo black anchor of a weekday network news program mean to broadcast media, and diversity? Lester Holt's son Stefan, who is also with NBC weighed in on this during an exclusive interview with CNN's senior media correspondent Brian Stelter: “…looking back at history, this is a big moment. But I would say that not any of us really define our careers just by race. I think as a news division you’re not defined by one anchor or one report. If you look at NBC News, it's a really diverse team, and I’m glad my dad is a part of that diversity. I'm glad to be a part of that. And they can bring that to homes and families all across the country. I think this is a really exciting moment that my dad is able to take on this challenge and move it forward.” Read More...

In an interview with PEOPLE, Lester Holt himself gave his thoughts about his new role and its impact on diversity in TV news: "Like a lot of African-Americans in this business or any other, we don't all want to necessarily be defined by our race," the journalist says. "But of course our race is a part of who we are."
Still, Holt, who says as a child he once asked his mother, "Why aren't there any negro people on TV?", is happy to be doing his part for diversity.
"I have always believed that especially young people should be able to turn on the TV and see people who kind of look like them," he says. "I'm honored." Read More...
