U of Chicago Resumes Classes After Online Threat

The University of Chicago has opened and resumed classes after an online threat made over the weekend forced university authorities to shut down its Hyde Park campus. The threat was made by someone said to be seeking retaliation for the death of Laquan McDonald, who was fatally shot 16 times last year by a police officer.

The Chicago Maroon said in a report that classes and activities resumed normally Tuesday [...] There will be an increased security presence across campus through the end of the autumn quarter, according to an e-mail sent to the University community by President Robert J. Zimmer.

The report also said Jabari R. Dean was arrested on Monday and charged in court with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. After being ascertained he had no means to carry out the threat - investigators found no guns in his off-campus apartment - Dean, 21, was released into his mother’s custody on Tuesday and ordered not to use the Internet, according to DNAInfo.

This is just the latest of an escalating number of racial incidents in campuses nationwide. A news article on Yahoo News, "Colleges trying to find ways to deal with racial incidents," says swift action is high among the best practices that school leaders can use to help defuse campus tension, experts say. "There's no such thing as having a perfect plan, but you have to continually be in the motion of creating a better campus climate," said Jabar Shumate, Oklahoma's vice president for the university community. -

The same approach is shared by Benjamin Reese, president of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, according to the above-article. Reese said without having to wait for students demanding a meeting, administrators can invite students to strategic meetings and join students in protests if it's over an issue they agree with.

Meanwhile, a faculty member at the center of a racially charged debate at Yale received the support of colleagues who wrote an open letter defending her, the Yale Daily News (YDN) reported. Forty-nine faculty members at Yale signed the letter asserting that an email lecturer and administrator Erika Christakis sent to Yale students was not racist and that her words have been distorted. - click here
