UNF is located in Jacksonville, Florida. This northeast Florida region is home to one of the largest urban school districts in the nation and also serves the surrounding rural areas. The college is the only state university system that provides undergraduate Deaf Educator preparation as well as a national supplier of ASL/English Interpreting graduates.

Job Function:

The Chair will provide direction and leadership to the faculty and programs in the department; administer the budget, physical resources, and personnel functions of the department; oversee recruitment efforts, respond to student academic requests and petitions that arise within the department; and work collaboratively with the college leadership team and Dean to advance the goals of the department and the vision of the college. The candidate will promote the department's efforts in developing, marketing, and implementing educational programs in response to assessed needs. Teaching, scholarship, and service requirements commensurate with the demands of the chair role are also required. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College.

The successful candidate must hold an appropriate doctoral degree from a regionally-accredited institution in special/exceptional education or a closely related field. 

Faculty Position Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have a record of experience in leadership activities within higher education or have strong potential for leadership. A strong record of active service to the community is expected. Candidates must be able to articulate visions for both graduate and undergraduate education and to show a commitment to engaging in innovation that will develop UNF's national reputation.

The candidate should have a record of higher education teaching, scholarship, evidence of securing external funding and service suitable to holding a tenured appointment as an associate or full professor in the department. Candidates must demonstrate skills indicative of exceptional communication, interpersonal engagement, and effective leadership qualities to be able to work collaboratively with the college leadership team and with colleagues from the College of Education and Human Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for management of closely related, but highly specialized disciplines within the department and must demonstrate the ability to apply new knowledge quickly and efficiently in the execution of their position. The candidate will exhibit a strong commitment to inclusion of persons with disabilities and individuals who are Deaf, along with a demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice for under-served and under-represented populations. The candidate must believe passionately that employing a diverse faculty pool is essential to the success of our students and will hold the highest regard for the value of partnership, innovation, and long-term community impact.

Departmental Requirements:

We are searching for an innovative leader to serve as the Chair of Exceptional, Deaf, and Interpreter Education with a commitment to inclusive education, building high-quality programs, cultivating a strong research culture, as well as engaging in innovation and excellence. The preferred candidate will have substantial experience in the Exceptional Education program area and will have demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, administrators, and other community stakeholders.
