Hispanics Stand to Lose Obamacare

Healthcare is one of life's most basic needs, yet it is also something out of reach for many poor Americans, especially Hispanics/Latinos.

That is where the Obamacare - the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly called the Affordable Care Act (ACA)- comes in. It is meant to make health care more affordable and ensures that members are adequately covered.

However, many Hispanics/Latinos stand to lose their only access to healthcare, as it is reported that the Supreme Court is considering to rule against it, the Latin Times reported. Deliberations were last Wednesday, and the Court's decision is expected to come out in June.

According to the report, Latinos in 34 states could lose access to healthcare. Of the 9.3 million people that would lose benefits if the law is curtailed, 1.2 million are Latinos, according to a statement from the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA).
“This will have a particularly devastating impact in the Latino community, where we have worked so hard to bring down the number of uninsured,” said Hector Sanchez, the NHLA Chair.

An article on VOXXI quoted Katherine Vargas, a White House spokeswoman, as saying a SC ruling against the Obamacare would "strip millions of Americans of health coverage, including 2.6 million Latinos who gained health insurance coverage since the start of the Affordable Care Act, a 7.7 percentage point drop in the uninsured rate over that period,” she said."

That article also presents one personal story of a Hispanic who have come to view the Obamacare as giving her a "sense of security" because of the subsidy it provides. To quote,“For me, it’s a sense of security,” Limones said, describing what it’s like to have health insurance. “I don’t have to worry about going into medical debt on top of student loan debt.” Read more Read More...

What could the scenario be if the Obamacare will indeed be struck down. Latin Times quoted Dr. Elena Rios, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association as saying in a statement: “Millions of Latinos and others will be competing for health care at clinics, hospitals and medical practices with dwindling charity care -- and more likely, will go without needed health and mental health care in our communities, spreading more infectious diseases.”

On their part, the Republican leadership also announced that they “formed a working group to propose a way out for the affected states if the court rules against the administration,” the report continues.
