Over $30 Billion in Benefits Given to Veterans, Servicemembers, Families/ President’s Mental Health Executive Order Hiring Goal Met

Summary:

Veterans Day 2013 is soon coming on November 11 and it is fitting that we turn to look at some of the good news concerning them.

A news release dated 11/8/13 stated that the Veterans Benefits Administration, which administers the program, has distributed over $30 billion in the form of tuition and other education-related payments to Veterans, Servicemembers, and their families; and to the universities, colleges, and trade schools they attend. ”This is one of the most important programs helping our Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans reach their educational goals and find a good job,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “We're proud this important benefit is making such a big difference in the lives of so many Veterans and their families.”

According to another recent news release dated 11/5/13, the Department of Veterans Affairs has hired 815 Peer Specialists and Peer Apprentices, exceeding the hiring goal set in President Obama’s Aug. 31, 2012 Executive Order aimed at improving access to mental health services for Veterans, service members and military families.

“We have made strong progress to expand Veterans’ access to quality mental health services, but we must continue to increase access,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “These newly hired employees, Veterans themselves, are uniquely equipped to guide fellow Veterans through difficult issues.”

Comment:

It is good to know the government is doing its best in helping veterans, servicemen and their families in different ways; most especially for returning veterans eager to find employment in the civilian sector. I hope more and more private companies will step up and do their share in giving more equal job opportunities to veterans, disabled or abled. That would be a patriotic way of serving the country as they are contributing to the economy, and more so, doing our veterans a great service.
