A military veteran lost his home while away on a medical trip, Yahoo News, citing AP, said. U.S. Navy veteran Philip Williams' home was demolished in the spring by town officials while he spent about six months recuperating from surgical complications in Fort Lauderdale, the report says.

Williams was shocked to come home to an empty lot where his home used to be. He thought there had been a fire, or something. Town officials said Williams' neighbors had been complaining of the state of disrepair of the house – a two-story cream-colored cottage with a red door in West Hempstead – and they deemed it to be a blight on the community.

Thus, according to the report, town officials sent inspectors who then determined Williams' house was 'a "dilapidated dwelling" unfit for habitation.'

"The town basically took everything from me," said Williams, who is now staying with a friend in Florida and has only two suitcases of belongings. "The town does not have a right to take all of my property, all of my possessions."

It is indeed a sad case, more so as the demolished house had been Williams' home since he was 6 months old, and many of the items in the home had been in his family since he was a newborn or had sentimental value, the report also says.

This unfortunate incident adds to the number of woes veterans face daily, such as unemployment, job discrimination, homelessness, difficulty in accessing healthcare and more. Many veterans also suffer from PTSD, and some cannot even get proper treatment due to lack of means.

Suicide remains an urgent problem for those who have served in the armed forces, with as many as 22 veterans committing suicide every day. More than 3,000 veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq have taken their own lives since 9/11. - click here

It is hoped Williams' case be thoroughly investigated – he has already filed a notice of claim – and the veteran be justly compensated for his loss of property., the largest diversity job board online, is a career opportunity resource and job search engine for the cultural diversity marketplace.
