DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

The Position

Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) seeks a Digital Communications Manager. This position, which will report to the Vice President, Strategic Communications, will develop and lead the organization's social media communications using a metrics-driven approach to expand, diversify and engage AU's online community.

Building an Online Community of Advocates

Americans United plays a prominent role in the national debate over issues that have taken center stage in recent years, including discrimination in the name of religion, LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, religious freedom, school prayer and vouchers.

In early 2018, AU welcomed current President and CEO Rachel Laser and has since embarked on a robust strategic planning process to prepare the organization to play a more prominent role in the issues that have taken center stage in the national conversation. That process led to the hiring of the new VP of Strategic Communications, Tali Israeli, in October 2018. With this new, dynamic leadership, AU is taking its communications efforts to the next level.

As part of this strategy, the organization is seeking a visionary with enough technical experience and political instincts to hit the ground running and re-imagine our digital approach. The Digital Communications Manager will build a program that will expand AU's presence on social media to engage, educate and mobilize a new generation of AU members, supporters and advocates in our mission.

Position Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Digital Communications Manager include:

Develop Strategy for Social Media Platforms:

  • Create a steady stream of creative content for all social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), ensuring that our messaging is on brand, easy to understand and targeted to specific audiences and digital platforms.

  • Develop social media campaigns for high-profile public policy efforts, statewide legislative battles, legal cases and other organizational priorities.

  • Identify additional opportunities for innovative and engaging content for social platforms including videos, graphics, polls, charts, etc.

  • Develop proactive strategy to increase engagement on Twitter including identifying opportunities to engage with coalition partners and influencers, participate or host Twitter Town Halls, engage in direct conversations with news media, and participate in breaking news/trending national conversations related to our issues.

  • Develop strategy to increase followers - particularly with a younger audience - on Instagram.

  • Utilize analytics to boost engagement and followers on all digital platforms, as well as use metrics to measure success, shifting strategy when necessary.

  • Identify opportunities to activate or strengthen additional/emerging digital platforms to broaden and diversify our online community (Snapchat, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc).

  • Work closely with AU's graphic designer to create visually compelling and shareable graphics that are on brand and on message.

Create Online Community of Advocates:

  • Develop engaging social media campaigns to mobilize advocates and promote action around organizational priorities and issues.

  • Identify opportunities to increase our advocacy efforts and engage new advocates in the digital media landscape.

  • Additional Responsibilities:

  • Update and maintain AU's website, finding new ways to engage our online community. Eventually, work with an outside firm and the VP of Strategic Communications to overhaul AU's website and combine other AU brands and websites into one.

  • Work with AU's graphic designer to create a cohesive online brand for the organization in look, feel and tone.

  • Identify opportunities and develop content and strategy for paid digital advertising.
