E.A. WHITNEY PROFESSORSHIP IN PLANT SCIENCES

Job Purpose:



The Department of Plant Sciences within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Wyoming seeks applications to fill a 9-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor focusing on genetic improvement and evaluation of plant materials. We seek to attract a diverse applicant pool, and encourage those with backgrounds and interests from a variety of disciplines to apply. The appointment will incorporate research, teaching, and service and will contribute to strategic goals of the Department by enhancing and expanding distance and hybrid courses offered away from main campus. The incumbent will be stationed at the Sheridan Research and Extension Center (ShREC) adjacent to Sheridan College in northern Wyoming, but will be expected to engage with stakeholders and colleagues throughout Wyoming.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Use conventional breeding, biotechnology, whole-genome approaches, genotype-by-environment evaluations, or other plant improvement techniques to identify and develop superior plant materials for horticulture, forage, or rangeland restoration uses in our region


  • Teach courses that directly contribute to curriculum in the Department of Plant Sciences and upper division courses in their area of specialization


  • Engage effectively with stakeholders, collaborators from UW and other institutions, Sheridan College, and industry partners to elevate the impact of ShREC and the Department of Plant Sciences on stakeholders within the region


  • Communicate effectively with Wyoming's producers, collaborators from UW and other institutions, and agricultural industry to help ShREC and the Department of Plant


  • Sciences to improve plant materials for multiple uses in the region


  • Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and other outlets


  • Develop an externally funded program with potential for national and/or international recognition


  • Recruit and mentor outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in the plant sciences


  • Serve on committees and advisory boards as needed




Minimum Qualifications:



  • Earned PhD in plant breeding, horticulture, native plant propagation, plant genetics, turfgrass science, forage science, or related discipline at the time of hire


  • Record of innovative research, with strong potential for publication in peer-reviewed journals


  • Evidence of ability to conduct independent and collaborative research in applied plant breeding, selection, and improvement with species of horticultural, forage, or conservation value


  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse audiences


  • Desired Qualifications:



  • Strong potential for instructional excellence and effectiveness in teaching, with demonstrated experience offering course content via non-traditional means (i.e. online, hybrid, asynchronous courses)


  • Evidence of commitment to training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate student researchers


  • A record of peer-reviewed publications, grant support, and scholarly accomplishments commensurate with experience


  • Experience leading or working as part of an interdisciplinary research team
