The Carlyle House - Historic Site Manager is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and executing a management plan for the operation and maintenance of a historic property. Work is performed under the general direction of the Park Operations Superintendent with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action. Annual performance goals will be set for the Historic Site Manager.

Essential Functions (with illustrative examples of work)

Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive program for the collection of historic properties and artifacts:

  • Maintains knowledge of Carlyle House Historic Furnishings Plan; recommends amendments and makes interpretations; identifies items, researches, and recommends purchase.

  • Maintains knowledge of period furnishings and arranges for appropriate display.

  • Ensures proper care of artifacts.

  • Meet and maintain American Association of Museum accreditation standards.

Establish, oversee, and participate in educational interpretive programs:

  • Develops and implements program and guidelines for interpretive tours.

  • Develops collaborative programs with other museums and historic sites.

  • Acts as liaison with educational and historical institutions and organizations.

  • Develops, coordinates, and schedules a comprehensive programming plan.

  • Develops materials and supervises the preparation of exhibits and other interpretive materials.

  • Manage Personnel:

  • Plans and directs the work of employees in the operation and maintenance of facilities, grounds, and equipment.

  • Determines workload, assigns priorities, schedules employees, and allocates resources.

  • Maintains attendance records, approves leave, and authorizes payment of wages.

  • Develops and implements training programs for employees.

  • Analyzes and resolves employee work problems through application and interpretation of Personnel Policies.

  • Develops performance standards and indicators and evaluates employee performance against those standards.

  • Ensures adherence to fair and equitable employment practices.

  • Interviews and selects applicants for full and part-time employment.

  • Promotes high levels of work performance and employee morale.

  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers.

  • Provide guidance and support to the Friends Group:

  • Recruits individuals and groups for membership in the Friends of the Carlyle House Historic Park group.

  • Acts as liaison between the Friends of the Carlyle House Historic Park and NOVA Parks.

  • Develops and maintains working relationships with volunteer groups and "Friends" through newsletters, other written materials, and programming.

  • Guides fund raising efforts through grant writing and other initiatives such as special programs.

  • Develop and manage budget:

  • Recommends operations, maintenance, and development items for budget; executes operating budget.

  • Interprets and applies NOVA Parks policies and procedures to meet personnel, budget, property management, and general service needs of the park.

  • Monitors operating budget, resale inventories, and revenue projections to ensure sound fiscal management.

  • Authorizes procurement of required items and/or services.

  • Prepares financial and administrative reports.

  • Manage facility operations:

  • Enforces rules, regulations, and policies of NOVA Parks.

  • Ensures proper maintenance of facility grounds and gardens.

  • Performs related work as required including physical labor.

  • Develops short term and long term goals and recommends operating objectives, strategies, and implementation plans.

  • Manages revenue-producing operations (rentals, retail, programs, and special events) to ensure compliance with business standards, procedures, and budget.

  • Maintains thorough and accurate record of repairs, preventative maintenance, and servicing through web-based maintenance software.

  • Establish and maintain positive public relations program:

  • Develops and fosters a positive public image for a historic park and NOVA Parks.

  • Provides information to the public and special interest groups through presentations and other means using accurate, courteous, and diplomatic communications.

  • Maintains effective relationships with groups such as vendors, local law enforcement, and special user groups.

  • Encourages visitor comments; investigates and responds to complaints.

  • Maintains professional contacts with other historic properties and museums.

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a master's or bachelor's degree in museum studies or closely related field.

    Physical: Non-manual and manual work with strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions in office and outdoor setting; will lift and move furniture; will climb ladders; will use tools and operate equipment.

    Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience in administrative museum work or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices used in museum management.

  • Knowledge of historic period of the Carlyle House.

  • Considerable knowledge and experience in personnel management.

  • Ability to develop comprehensive operating procedures and performance standards and to evaluate programs and employees against such standards.

  • Ability to review and analyze expenditures and revenues in determining appropriate budgets.

  • Considerable ability to identify and isolate problems, and to initiate appropriate actions.

  • Considerable ability to deal effectively with the public and special interest groups and to provide a strong, positive public relations program with considerable ability to interpret and explain NOVA Parks policies, rules, and procedures to employees and to the public.

  • Considerable ability to communicate clearly and effectively with ability to prepare and present accurate reports.

  • Knowledge of computers with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office Programs.

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a driver's license; must maintain safe driving record.

  • Availability for call in emergency situations and to work additional hours during peak operating times including shift work and weekends.

  • Ability to obtain/maintain required certifications.

  • Certification or ability to obtain certification in CPR and first aid.

  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
