Marketing & Communications Manager

Status: Exempt, Full-time

Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) is seeking a Marketing & Communications Manager. Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Director, the Manager is responsible for coordinating and completing tasks that support the organization's overall marketing and communication strategies.

The Manager helps organize and execute comprehensive communications for CVNL, supporting activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization's brand. The Manager will support the Director in the implementation of a broad range of activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership including: printed marketing collateral; the website; email campaigns; digital and print advertising; media and public relations; and social media communications.

This individual will be an ambassador for the organization and will continually build relationships, both internally and externally. By helping advance the organization's position with relevant constituents, the Manager drives broader awareness and support for the organization.

Internal and External Communications

  • Support the development and implementation of key internal and external communications

  • Draft and disseminate various communications for staff and key external audiences

  • Create and format presentations for internal and external communications

  • Support the development and implementation of various staff communication processes and procedures

  • Serve as brand ambassador and ensure compliance across internal and external communications with brand guidelines and standards


  • Help implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance CVNL's brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences

  • Digital Marketing

  • Support development and dissemination of CVNL digital promotions including: email marketing; social media marketing, Pay Per Click (PPC); Search Engine Optimization (SEO); content marketing; marketing automation; and inbound marketing

  • Help oversee and update CVNL's Google Ads account

  • Press and Media Relations

  • Help execute the marketing/public relations strategy that will allow CVNL's leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers

  • Serve as copy editor as requested

  • Keep track of and update press lists

  • Keep track of and update influencer lists

  • Print Advertising

  • Support advertising requests from departments and work with Marketing & Communications Director to create ad content

  • Serve as copy editor as requested by Marketing & Communications Director

  • Communicate with advertisers as requested by Marketing & Communications Director

  • Oversee and maintain online events calendar

  • Work with departments to ensure content is updated on a regular basis

  • Work with various staff to create, edit, and publish blogs, whitepapers, case studies, and stories

  • Content

  • Help support all events and program areas with presentations, marketing collateral, and messaging

  • Support events and program areas through copywriting and copyediting

  • Work with the leadership team to create and publish resources, print and online, to advance CVNL's image as a go-to resource for nonprofit leaders

  • Administrative

  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain brand graphics and graphic standards for CVNL offices

  • Compile and update biographies for the Board of Directors, executive team, and staff

  • Help oversee messaging and content across various channels and mediums to ensure it meets established guidelines

  • Support Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems that further engage all CVNL relationships, both internally and externally

  • Clean and segment marketing lists, working with department staff to ensure all audiences are captured

  • Help manage day-to-day activities including budgeting, planning, and staff development

  • Help administer marketing communications reporting, including monthly metrics tracking

  • Maintain communications records

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related field

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a similar marketing/communications position

  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in copywriting and copyediting

  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships internally and externally

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management and staff

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Some experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print publications

  • Knowledge and understanding of social media marketing

  • Basic understanding of audience segmentation and key platforms used to communicate externally preferred

  • Strong skills using communications software including Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)

  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented, and data-driven

  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive

  • Passion for CVNL's mission

  • Basic graphic design experience a plus

  • Experience with Google products preferred
