The Opportunity

As the Partnership Development Director in Literacy, you will steer WestEd's efforts to expand the reach and impact of Reading Apprenticeship professional learning services, in order to improve teacher practice and adolescent literacy outcomes in historically underserved and underrepresented communities. In a period when states, districts, and schools are seeking to accelerate learning, you will work hand-in-hand with the Literacy team, as well as WestEd's communications and institutional development teams, to raise Reading Apprenticeship's visibility and contribute to the ongoing development and high-quality implementation of Reading Apprenticeship.

As a key voice within Literacy, the Partnership Development Director will guide the development and implementation of Reading Apprenticeship's proactive business development strategy. The position's core responsibilities include developing and managing a pipeline and state and district services sales team for Reading Apprenticeship, raising the visibility of WestEd's Reading Apprenticeship brand, service line, and building networks. As a member of the Literacy leadership team, the Partnership Development Director will use their expertise in business development, adolescent literacy policy, programs, and/or professional learning to contribute to the overall direction of the Reading Apprenticeship State and District Services team so that the team continues to meet expected revenue goals and client needs and satisfaction.

Core Focus Areas

Develop and manage sales strategy for WestEd's Reading Apprenticeship service line (40%)

  • Manage and continue to build a pipeline of new and repeat clients; initially this will be approximately 30% new clients and 70% repeat clients. Over time the mix will move to focus more on new business client acquisition.

  • Develop the capacity of the Reading Apprenticeship School and District Services team to contribute to business development revenue goals, including proposal development, nurturing existing client relationships, and inside sales

  • Identify new targets and leads, and manage lead generation and qualification processes

  • Identify competitors and market needs in the adolescent literacy space

  • Contribute to the overall development and execution of WestEd's literacy business plan, including developing bid/no bid criteria, writing proposals and statements of work

  • Create and manage pursuit strategy and teams for major clients

Build and leverage networks with key decision-makers in state departments of education, local education agencies, and other affiliated service providers (30%)

  • Identify, meet, and introduce key members of the School and District Services team to known and new networks

  • Nurture existing partnerships with networks as well as forming relationships with the existing Reading Apprenticeship network

  • Develop and cultivate strong relationships with potential new and existing clients, decision makers, and key influencers in the literacy professional learning and technical assistance service space

  • Raise the visibility of Reading Apprenticeship (20%)

  • Develop and implement a strategy to represent Reading Apprenticeship service lines and individual team expertise at key national and regional conferences aligned to the State and District Services business goals

  • Collaborate with Literacy and WestEd Communications teams, as well as Institutional Development, to craft and implement outreach and visibility plans and provide input on messaging

  • Raise the visibility of individual staff and Reading Apprenticeship facilitators as thought leaders and trusted partners in adolescent literacy and professional learning

  • Collaborate with other service line teams across WestEd to support cross-promotion of services

  • Contribute to the overall direction and management of WestEd's Literacy team (10%)

  • Serve as a member of the Literacy leadership teams

  • Provide feedback and insight from clients to help shape decisions about future program development, which is also informed by ongoing research, strategic goals, and feasibility

  • Inform the leadership team about most current market and user trends as they impact Reading Apprenticeship brand and service line

  • Guided by the Literacy strategic plan, determine how School and District Services and grant-funded initiatives complement and leverage each other to expand reach and impact

  • What We're Looking For

    To help us expand Reading Apprenticeship's positive impact for adolescent learners from multiple racial, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, we are looking for a passionate team member who has the following:

  • Proven ability to draw on established networks to secure district, federal, state, or foundation funding to increase equitable access to evidence-based services or products

  • Exceptional understanding of school district and state policies, structures, contracting practices, and funding mechanisms especially as they relate to adolescent literacy, professional learning, curriculum and instruction, and equitable student outcomes

  • Bachelor's degree in literacy, administration, curriculum and instruction, or any field that provides the experience to perform the responsibilities outlined above

  • At least 5 years of experience in education

  • Skilled in clearly and effectively presenting and writing for, as well as collaborating with, racially and ethnically diverse audiences of educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders

  • Other degrees, skills, abilities, experiences of interest

  • Experience with establishing business development targets and appropriate metrics for ensuring that the team is on track for meeting revenue goals

  • Experience working in a school district or state department of education with responsibilities for secondary literacy, curriculum and instruction, assessment, or other related area

  • Experience in managing, developing and collaborating with support staff, peers, organizational leaders to achieve business development goals

  • Experience with facilitating meetings and guiding project management focused on achieving business development goals

  • Experience using Client Relationship Management tools (e.g., SalesForce), as well as other software tools, to manage pipeline, campaigns, facilitate information sharing with team members, and generate metrics

  • Experience with using web-based and social media and digital outreach tools to build brand awareness
