Building Inspections Division

The Building Inspection Division ensures buildings are constructed safely and comply with the State of Minnesota and local building and fire codes. The Division reviews plans, conducts on-site inspections, issues permits, approves occupancy and inspects fire disaster scenes.

Position Responsibilities

The Plan Reviewer I position supports the Building Inspection Division by ensuring standards are enforced through the use of codes to safeguard, life, limb, health, property, and public welfare in the City of Eden Prairie. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  1. Reviews and interprets both residential and commercial blueprints and specifications submitted for building permits for new construction, alterations, additions, demolitions, repairs and maintenance for code compliance.

  2. Works with contractors and designers to achieve code compliance.

  3. Fields phone calls, meets with contractors, architects, engineers, job superintendents, and homeowners to discuss building and other code related issues.

  4. Maintains an effective working relationship with inspections department staff and other City staff members to maintain positive working relationships to assist in achieving code compliance.

  5. Maintains technical proficiency with building and other applicable codes; researches and collects evaluation and research reports on new materials and methods of construction and shares this information with field inspectors.

  6. Assists in developing various department information handouts to assist in educating contractors, homeowners, architects, and property owners on various regulatory codes and code requirements; assists in developing various department inspection check sheets to assist field inspectors for use when performing daily inspections and for contractors and job superintendents to use as check list to check for prior scheduling of their inspections.

Position Requirements

Education: Associates degree or two-year technical certificate in the BIT program, Architectural Drafting, or a bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering required; State Building Official Certification/License preferred and required within 2 years.

Work Experience: Minimum of two years’ experience working in a recognized trade such as carpentry, architecture, engineering or drafting is required. Five years’ work experience preferred. Knowledge and work experience using MN State Building codes preferred.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required; a cover letter and resume must be attached with application; Strong math skills required. Valid driver’s license and excellent driving record required.

Physical Effort: Physical effort is light for the majority of work with lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying limited to 25 pounds intermittently. Report preparation and writing at times requires extended use of a keyboard.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed in a normal office environment. Plan Reviewers will occasionally be required to perform work in a field environment, which can include exposure to traffic and moving construction equipment. In these circumstances, working conditions can be wet, muddy, slippery, dusty, and windy. At times, there may be intermittent exposure to disagreeable working conditions. Field environment work can also include climbing ladders, scaffolding, and walking on uneven surfaces.
