SPECIAL COLLECTIONS (GENEALOGY) SUPERVISOR

Purpose of job: Responsible for leading the Library's digital and special collection efforts. Serves the organization as the expert in genealogy, local history, digitization and archives. Responsible for providing specialized reference services, programming functions and collection analysis. Leads internal team and provides training in areas of expertise to customers and staff.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Serves as system leader and subject expert. Demonstrates thorough subject expertise and develops strategies for special collections.


  • Coordinates planning and implementation of digitization projects in collaboration with division, IT and Marketing staff.


  • Administers special collections, serving as a community leader, promoting collection resources and services. Establishes criteria for and performs collection development based on knowledge of local history, genealogy, community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials. Plans, prepares and conducts system-wide programs.


  • Oversees the Library's archive and directs team in processing archival materials employing standard archival practices; maintains special archival files and collections, both physical and digital.


  • Promotes the Library through community outreach, maintains communication and collaborates with other libraries, archival repositories, community organizations, schools and local history/genealogical organizations.


  • Develops and leads training for customers and staff on the use of Library resources in the area of subject specialty, educates staff, and models the use of such resources.


  • Supervises staff, volunteers, volunteens and/or practicum students/interns. Sets individual performance measurements for staff and holds them accountable, as assigned. Responsibilities include coaching, managing, hiring, orienting and evaluating assigned team.


  • Proactively provides a high level of customer service and assists customers through various aspects of utilizing the Library, including expert level reference service.


  • Assumes responsibility for the operation of the location in the absence of the manager.


  • Keeps abreast of developments within the profession specific to genealogy, digitization, archives, and local history. Maintains collection, technology, reference and readers' advisory skills to assure quality of service.


  • Participates and presents local, state and national conferences. Represents the Library as a member of state or national professional organizations.


  • Prepares and manages budgets, as assigned.


  • Performs additional duties as assigned including being a project lead and/or serving on task forces, committees, etc.




Qualifications and Requirements:



  • Master's of Library Science Degree from ALA accredited institution of higher learning or a Master's Degree in a field related to history, special collections, archives and/or digital collections.


  • One to three years' experience as a Librarian in a public, academic or special Library or three to five years' experience working in the field of genealogy, history, archives or digitization.


  • Advanced knowledge of digital collection and scanning software.


  • Ability and commitment to work with the public.


  • Ability to use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.


  • Ability to work independently with limited direction.


  • Acts with the customer in mind using information gained from interacting with customers. Meets the expectations and requirements of external and internal customers


  • Ability to effectively present in a variety of formal settings - one on one, group, peers, direct reports, etc. Command attention and manage group process.


  • Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, software programs (i.e. Windows/Microsoft Office) and other job related equipment and systems.


  • Valid driver's license which meets the minimum requirements of CML's commercial vehicle insurance policy. Ability to travel between locations per job requirements.


  • Schedule: Combination of mornings, afternoons, evenings & weekends, alternating Friday/Saturday. Sundays as assigned.
