Facts About the Trucking Industry

The most significant thing about the trucking industry is its essentiality of the trucking industry to the American standard of living, Shannon Newton, recently-appointed president of the Arkansas Trucking Association, said in an interview in which she lamented the “public's blind spot toward trucking.” She also said that the industry is much more diverse than we probably get credit for.

According to the American Trucking Associations, the trucking industry is one of the country's largest employers, and it faces myriad issues associated with hiring, training, and maintaining its workforce.

Employment for light truck or delivery services drivers is projected to grow 4 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Some factors may impact the demand for additional truck drivers. Because of improved routing through the help of GPS technology, BLS says that existing truck drivers can be more productive, more efficient and better at navigating traffic, thus lessening the need for hiring more drivers. At the same time, higher diesel prices may also limit the hiring needs of companies, as they focus more on technological solutions.

However, as the economy grows, the need for more deliveries is expected to increase. Job opportunites for delivery truck drivers is expected to be competitive, as these jobs are more desireable than the long-haul trucking jobs.

In general, short-term-on-the-job training is required of truck drivers.
