The new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty Campus will open in the Spring of 2025. This 469,000 square foot facility will be home to UI Health Care’s nationally recognized Orthopedics service line, offering comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible care across the outpatient, inpatient and surgical venues. These state-of-the-art clinical facilities will also include a full-service community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, retail pharmacy, and emergency department as well as an array of support services. The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at UI Health Care is seeking a full-time Athletic Trainer to provide direct patient care in the physician practice setting. The position will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and provide direct assistance to other medical providers such as physicians, advanced practice providers, physical therapists, medical assistants, and registered nurses in providing direct patient care for our patients.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform initial patient assessment including medical history and physical examination.
  • Present patient to supervising provider including history, physical exam, pertinent test results, and working diagnosis.
  • Collaborate with attending provider to determine appropriate treatment plan, communicate with patient, and provide further home exercise/rehabilitation instruction as needed.
  • Collaborate with attending provider to apply or remove splints/casts/braces and fit crutches; provide product education.
  • Remove sutures and provide appropriate wound care and dressing changes.
  • Performs patient care related to cardiac monitoring (acquiring 12-lead EKGs), vital signs, specimens (i.e. blood, urine or sputum) and properly packaging and sending to specimen control.
  • Document clinic patient visit according to documentation policies. Collect data and transcribe in the electronic medical record for LIP with appropriate cosign.
  • Develop and distribute ongoing patient centered educational information including exercise instruction, gait training, wound care and concussion management per the treating provider.
  • Coordinate internal and external patient medical records and imaging prior to appointments to ensure optimal patient care and clinic efficiency.
  • Facilitate the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families and staff.
  • Communicate via compliant phone/electronic means to enhance continuity of care, and perform clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing information to other departments.
  • Provide guidance to the patient as per the physician’s instructions for safe and effective care.
  • May serve as a preceptor for the University of Iowa Athletic Training Residency Program

Location: This position will be moving to Medical Center North Liberty on or around April 2025. Prior to Medical Center North Liberty opening, candidates are expected to being their job orientation and onboarding at our Medical Center University Campus and/or University of Iowa Health Care Sports Medicine Clinic.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited program
  • 1 year of relevant, related experience as an Athletic Trainer
  • Board Certified Athletic Trainer
  • Iowa Athletic Trainer License, or license eligible
  • CPR/BLS certification
  • Working knowledge of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in athletic training or related field if professional degree was BS or BA
  • Experience working in the physician practice setting
  • Completion of an Athletic Training Residency Program
  • 3-5 years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer
  • BCS-O certification
