The Medical Supply Technician (MST) will support the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at the Northern Colorado VA Outpatient Clinic. The MST will be responsible for decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, high-level disinfection, sterilizing, and distributing medical instruments and equipment for various medical departments, including surgical, dental, and specialty clinics. The MST will also ensure compliance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) standards, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the Joint Commission (TJC), and other relevant regulations.Key ResponsibilitiesSterile Processing & Instrument HandlingReceive, inspect, and decontaminate surgical and medical instruments from operating rooms, clinics, and dental facilities.Disassemble, clean, lubricate, and reassemble complex surgical and dental equipment.Conduct post-sterilization inspections to ensure integrity and sterility.Operate and monitor sterilization and high-level disinfection equipment (e.g., autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilizers, and endoscope reprocessors).Assemble surgical trays, instrument sets, and specialty kits according to standard procedures.Quality Control & ComplianceEnsure compliance with VHA Directive 1116, AAMI/ANSI Standards, FDA, CDC, and Joint Commission requirements.Conduct biological, chemical, and mechanical testing to ensure the effectiveness of sterilization.Identify and report damaged, defective, or missing instruments.Maintain records in the Censitrac Instrument Tracking System for sterilization and inventory management.Inventory & Equipment MaintenanceMaintain accurate stock of sterile and non-sterile supplies.Ensure first-in, first-out rotation of sterile stock to prevent expiration.Perform preventive maintenance checks on sterilization equipment.Training & CollaborationAttend VA-mandated training on sterile processing best practices.Provide guidance and education on proper instrument handling to clinical staff.Participate in daily huddles and quality improvement meetings. QualificationsKnowledge and Expertise:Up-to-date knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinical settings.Understanding of event-related packaging regarding sterility.Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.Awareness of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross-contamination.Medical and Technical Skills:Basic knowledge of medical terminology to assemble specialty operating room/clinic instrument sets.Understanding of microbiology principles, particularly regarding microorganism resistance to heat, chemicals, and ionizing radiation.Working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to understand instrumentation use.Ability to make educated instrument substitutions as necessary in instrument trays or on an emergency basis.Certifications (Preferred/Required within 6 months of hire):Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)  Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)  Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required before start date.Knowledge & Skills:Understanding of infection control practices and aseptic techniques.Ability to operate sterilizers, washer-disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and scope reprocessors.Familiarity with Censitrac or similar instrument tracking systems.Knowledge of OSHA, CDC, and VA patient safety standards.Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.Additional Requirements:Must be willing to travel on occasion for VA training sessions.
